Franchise Scorecard
Write your franchise scorecard before the presentation.
A discovery day or executive meeting is designed to help you understand the brand, its leadership, and its vision.
It may also be an exciting experience.
You meet the team. You see the support structure. You hear the growth story. You can begin picturing yourself as part of the system.
That excitement isn’t necessarily a problem.
Allowing it to change your criteria can be.
Before the presentation, write down what matters most:
- The owner’s actual role
- Required hours and responsibilities
- Total investment and working capital
- Hiring requirements
- Sales and local marketing expectations
- Franchisee support
- Unit-level economics
- Family and lifestyle alignment
- The concerns that still need answers
Then evaluate the brand against the standards you established while you were objective.
Don’t add points because you liked the presentation.
Don’t remove concerns because you connected with the leadership team.
Relationships matter, but the model still needs to withstand careful evaluation.
Decide what matters before someone begins selling you on why everything matters.
Write the scorecard first.
