It’s human nature to compare.

We look at others—friends, family, colleagues—and measure where we are against where they seem to be. Their careers, their businesses, their lifestyle. And often, without realizing it, we start to question our own path.

There’s a well-known idea that “comparison is the thief of joy,” and it’s one that continues to prove true—especially in today’s world where visibility into others’ lives is constant.

Before the global shift in 2020, many W2 employees looked at entrepreneurs with a sense of admiration, and sometimes envy. From the outside, it appeared they had more freedom, more control over their time, and more opportunity to build something of their own.

Then everything changed.

The pandemic created an unexpected pause. For some, it came in the form of furloughs or layoffs. For others, it was a moment to step back and reassess priorities, goals, and long-term direction. What followed was a period many now refer to as “The Great Resignation”—a time when people began to rethink what they wanted out of their careers and their lives.

During this period, I’ve had the opportunity to work with individuals exploring entrepreneurship through franchise ownership. Not because they were chasing what someone else had, but because they were beginning to ask a different set of questions:

What do I want my life to look like?

What kind of work do I actually enjoy?

What level of control do I want over my future?

For many, the realization wasn’t about becoming an entrepreneur overnight. It was about understanding that there are multiple paths—and that timing matters.

One of the simplest, yet most powerful truths to come out of these conversations is this:

There is no universal timeline for success.

Some people build careers inside organizations they love.

Some take the leap into business ownership early.

Others arrive there later, after years of experience and perspective.

None of these paths are better than the others—they’re just different.

There’s a saying that captures this perfectly:

There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon.

They both shine—just at different times.

The challenge isn’t figuring out how to replicate someone else’s journey.

It’s recognizing when it’s your time to step forward—and having the confidence to move in that direction.

Because ultimately, fulfillment doesn’t come from comparison.

It comes from alignment.
